It’s official – Hermanus is the most loved destination in South Africa and is ranked 18th in the world.

This according to Tourism Sentiment Index (TSI), a travel data intelligence solution created by Destination Think, a marketing agency.

The Western Cape claims three of the top 50 “Most Loved Destinations”. Stellenbosch ranking at number 34, and Cape Town moved up 14 places to 40. Last year Hermanus was number 41. Hermanus’ top asset was wildlife.

The Maldives was ranked the most-loved destination, followed by two destinations in Queensland, Australia.

According to Dr Annelie Rabie, Overstrand Executive Mayor, the region’s tourism experienced an encouraging season, and this latest listing will no doubt place the Overberg on the map of new and return travellers.

“The Overstrand Municipality is grateful to all the local tourism and business stakeholders responsible for making this a top destination for residents and visitors,” she said, acknowledging the collective effort required to achieve such a success.

“The news is set to benefit the people and businesses of the Overstrand and surrounding Overberg.”

After the news was announced on Facebook several residents reacted with mixed feelings about this achievement: “Hermanus should be top of anyone’s bucket list,” one Facebook user posted.

“With Hermanus listed under the top 20 and with our top asset the wildlife it is important to look after the safety of our visitors in Fernkloof,” a reader said. “The municipality must walk the extra mile to assure the safety of our tourists.” Facebook users also implied that the controversial Hermanus Country Market contributed to this achievement. “Well done to Hermanus Country Market and every trader . . . but most importantly every visitor local and lekker . . .

“With Hermanus Country Market the biggest drawcard . . .” another user said. “Hermanus Country Market most certainly has a huge part to play as a drawcard in the area.”. According to satop100courses Arabelle claimed the seventh spot in the top golf courses in South Africa. Arabella is one of the country’s leading golf resorts with a golf course that has been consistently ranked in the top ten since it opened.
