An Overstrand baboon died from serious injuries after she was discovered by baboon monitors and rights activists, sparking fresh concerns about the primates’ safety.

They were made aware of an injured female baboon in Silversands, Betty’s Bay. “On first inspection it seemed the wound on her rear thigh was from a dog bite,” Dean O’Neill, Municipal Manager, said. “A known activist for baboon rights was also disrupting the course of events. The team was unable to assess the female’s injuries before she moved away into the thick bushes.” Hours later, she was found dead, apparently after her condition had deteriorated to the point where she stopped breathing. “The public is again requested not to interfere with baboon management when carrying out their duties, for it has dire consequences for these animals,” O’Neill concluded.
