Abalone worth more than R700 000 was confiscated in an operation in Villiersdorp on Saturday.
Law Enforcement and Traffic Services, Provincial Traffic and the Villiersdorp Police jointly recovered 4 224 units of abalone successfully.
They identified a vehicle on the R43 driving in the direction of Villiersdorp from Caledon. The vehicle was chased to Villiersdorp, where the suspect fled the vehicle and ran into the nearby informal settlement.
The officers were unable to catch the man and a case of reckless and negligent driving and possession and transport of abalone is being investigated.
