Danger Point Lighthousenear Gansbaai opened its doors to visitors for the first time in two years. Guests had the opportunity to explore the lighthouse and grounds on Saturday 30 April, Sunday 1 May and Monday the 2nd. Overstrand Municipality stated that access over the long weekend was just a temporary arrangement. It will become permanent once the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and other relevant administrative matters are finalised between Transnet National Ports Authority (to whom the property belongs), the Overstrand Municipality and Gansbaai Tourism. The above arrangement is made possible by a verbal agreement among the Executive Director of Lighthouse Navigational Services, David Gordon, Overstrand Executive Mayor Annelie Rabie, Overstrand Ward 14 Councillor Riana de Coning, Glenda Kitley of Gansbaai Tourism and Barnie Germishuys, ex-Operational Manager: Lighthouse Services.The lighthouse was erected in 1895, 43 years after the tragic sinking of the troopship HMS Birkenhead in the early hours of 26 February 1852, to warn ships of the dangers of the reef. It overlooks the Birkenhead Rock, where the ship met her sad fate a mere 5 km from the Danger Point shore. It is a working memorial for the victims and survivors.For mor
