Three shooters gunned down a well-known businesswoman from Zwelihle in broad daylight in the parking area of the Whale Coast Mall in Hermanus on Thursday afternoon in what appears to be a targeted hit on her life.

Shocked staff of businesses in the vicinity told the Hermanus Times that they heard five shots ring out. Sources revealed that three men were seen fleeing the scene in a taxi without number plates.

The apparent hit follows less than six months after the woman’s husband was gunned down in a similar manner at the Zwelihle Taxi Rank in broad daylight. At the time, the well-known taxi owner confirmed that they had moved from Zwelihle last year as they feared for their lives when it became known their names were reportedly on a hit list.

The management of Whale Coast Mall shopping centre confirmed the “unfortunate incident involving armed suspects” in a statement released shortly after the fatal incident on Thursday 8 August.

The statement further read: “The safety and security of our shoppers, tenants, and staff remain our highest priority, and we are taking all necessary steps to assist the authorities in their investigation. We urge the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as the investigation is ongoing. Additional security measures have been put in place to ensure continued safety at the centre.”
