Established in 1952, as an independent, special needs school, Camphill has offered generations of children the opportunity for specialised education and care.

Camphill School, established by Hermanus resident and mother, May Redman, with the support of Dr Karl König, founder of the worldwide Camphill Movement, perpetuates the philosophy that all children, no matter what their ability, carry within them a divine spark of humanity, worthy of love, respect and nurturing. In this peaceful and caring environment, children are assisted to develop to their full, unique potential.

One of only a small number of special needs schools in the vast, largely-rural Overberg region, Camphill caters for day learners, aged from seven to 18 years. Approximately 98% of their 55 learners come from the communities in and around Hermanus. Their parents are often unable to contribute or can only afford to make a small contribution to their school fees. The subsidy from the WCED together with the school fees covers approximately 35% of their annual budget.

At Camphill School the learners are happy and self-confident. They are loved for the special people they are and offered a chance at self-actualisation and hope. Camphill has been a place of hope and love for 70 years. . Camphill invites you to come and celebrate the milestone on 4 November from 18:00 at La Vierge Restaurant. The tickets for the evening are R500 pp which includes a three course meal, a glass of bubbly, wines from our Valley, live music and a chance to win big prizes. Please contact the school for more details at school@camphill-hermanus.org.za or call the school’s office on 028 312 4949.
