The vigilance of a police officer led to the arrest of two suspects who were caught in the act of extorting money from a shop owner in Zwelihle.
Capt Fadila September, spokesperson for Hermanus police, reported the officer was on duty on Wednesday 6 December when he spotted six men enter Starlom Shop around 10:00.
The men’s demeanour seemed suspicious and police officers followed the unknown men into the shop.
“The police officers witnessed the men demand money from the shop owner,” September said. “Four of the suspects managed to escape when police entered the premises. The officers arrested two of the suspects in the shop and found the money in their possession. The money was confiscated.”
The police officers were commended for their vigilance and speedy reaction that led to the arrests.
The police warns that cases of extortion are on the increase and urged the community to report such cases to the police by phoning the Provincial Extortion Hotline toll-free number 0800 31 44 44.
