You know something special is bound to happen when you hear a bunch of Harley Davidsons rumbling from far away before one gets to see their shiny paintwork and proud owners riding into town in a convoy.
The Hermanus Night Shelter received a R107 000 donation from the Cape Town Harley Owners Group this past Sunday.
A small handover ceremony took place before the Windsor Hotel, with Dr Annelie Rabie, Mayor of the Overstrand and Councillor Elnora Gillion there to share the heartfelt moment with Ray Hartmann of the Hermanus Night Shelter Association, when he received the large cheque from the Cape Town Harley Owners Group.
“The Hermanus Night Shelter has been four years-plus in the making,” said Hartmann. “The reason it is possible is people such as the members of the Cape Town Harley Owners Group. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the big amount on the cheque.”
Malvin Meyer, secretary and historian of the Cape Town Harley Owners Group, said the group has donated all proceeds from its fundraising efforts over the past six years to help with the construction of the night shelter. “We raised the money through various fundraising initiatives at our Cape Seal Rally in Hermanus,” he said.
“We donated all proceeds to the building project for the past six years. The donations came from raffles, auctions, and donations from third parties. But this year’s R107 000 we handed over was the highest so far.”
