Novice and experienced birders can look forward to a special course filled with valuable information and colourful stories about our feathered friends.

“A flight higher” birding course will be presented by Anton Odendal on 20 and 21 August at Fernkloof Nature Reserve in Hermanus. Odendal is a BirdLife South Africa-recommended course provider.

The Flight Higher course is aimed at enhancing one’s experience of birds by illustrating how to look at and listen to these wonderful creatures.

The course is not too technical and is filled with anecdotes, wonderful memories and often hard-to-believe stories about the Overberg’s feathered friends.

All sections of the course have been adapted, and the course now includes several brand new talks such as: . Celebrating the Cape Gannet as the Bird of the Year. . How to prepare when planning to bird in a new area – a case study of birding in the Kruger National Park or A celebration of the Endemic Terrestrial Bird Species of seven South African regions. (Participants will vote on the talk to be presented.) . Top birding destinations in the Overberg region, and here participants will again decide among various choices.

All the talks have been specifically adapted for the Western Cape. Roughly 50 conservation case studies are also included in the course.

Those interested in attending can choose between paying R650 for the whole course, course notes, a practical outing and coffee or tea. Alternatively, R250 per individual session. Gift vouchers for attendance of the course are also available.

The course programme and registration form is available from Anton at birding@overberg.co.za or WhatsApp at 082 550 3347.
