About 200 people showed up for the clean-up operation in Goniwe Park in Villiersdorp.

In a groundbreaking initiative the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs, Theewaterskloof Municipality, Enviro Care TWK, Soul Food, the Villiersdorp Community Buy-Back Centre and local residents joined forces to clean up the informal settlement of Goniwe Park. The collaboration marks a first-of-its-kind effort in the area, setting an inspi- ring example of what is possible when communities and authorities work hand in hand.

“Three key lessons emerged from the initiative,” Deputy Mayor of Theewaterskloof Jennifer McKenzie said, “advocacy, community education and awareness are vital to building cleaner societies; recycling is essential to healthier living; and community participation remains the cornerstone of environmental progress.” McKenzie said the scale of the challenge quickly became clear.

“While a 5-ton truck was filled with general waste, a 1,3-ton vehicle was loaded with recyclable materials collected during the clean-up. This small but powerful demonstration proved that residents are eager to recycle once they are shown the benefits and what to do.”

Around 200 people participated in the event, most of whom had not even been formally invited. A large number of young people were present, highlighting both the enthusiasm of youth and the ongoing challenge of high unemployment in the community.

Organisers said the litter problem is far from solved. Local rivers remain heavily polluted, underscoring the urgent need for ongoing interventions. However, the momentum from this clean-up offers hope. With continued awareness campaigns, organisers believe Villiersdorp and the broader Theewaterskloof could see a significant reduction in waste and a shift towards greener, healthier communities. Looking ahead, participants called on the municipality to encourage open-space adoption projects and greening initiatives across settlements.

Such efforts will not only improve the environment but also uplift community morale and quality of life. Thankful for everyone who participated, including the municipality and the WCDEA, this initiative proves that with cooperation and determination cleaner and safer communities are possible,” the organisers stated.
