KLEINMOND – Authorities are on high alert in the Overstrand Municipality after a fire destroyed at least 12 structures in the Overhills informal settlement, Kleinmond, in the early hours of Saturday 6 December.
Local firefighters responded to the blaze at approximately 03:00 and no casualties were reported.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
“Initial assessments show that about 12 structures were destroyed,” explains Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill in a statement.
One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation, he adds.

Municipal teams are on site conducting assessments.
“Our Disaster Management and Housing Department are continuing with assessments, while the Operational Department is busy clearing the area before starter kits can be issued,” says O’Neill.
Many affected residents have chosen to stay with family and friends for now.
“They opted not to use the community hall,” O’Neill said.
Dignity packs will be provided once new structures are rebuilt, while Gift of the Givers, the humanitarian organisation, is expected to assist once rebuilding begins.
One of the municipality’s temporary firefighters was affected by the fire, losing all his belongings.
“He confirmed that his family is safe,” O’Neill says.
