“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Max, our cherished caracal, at Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary on Tuesday 30 July. His departure marks the end of a remarkable journey filled with love, resilience and unforgettable moments.”
This was the statement Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary released after the big cat’s death.
Max was diagnosed with kidney and liver function problems in March, and despite best efforts his health continued to decline. “Over the past few weeks Max struggled with his medications and showed significant signs of fatigue and discomfort,” Heather Blackstock, marketing manager said.
“On 29 July, some of the staff members spent a beautiful day with Max filled with play, a special meal and cherished moments. He was then taken to our on-site veterinary clinic where Dr Peter Caldwell conducted a thorough examination.”
According to Blackstock, Caldwell determined that Max’s health would continue to deteriorate over the coming months due to severe kidney and liver damage. “Through animal communication Max had expressed his wish to be let go should his condition worsen. Respecting his wishes and honouring his life as the magnificent ‘Prince Maximillian’, we made the incredibly difficult decision to let him go peacefully,” Blackstock said.
“As Max’s spirit left, the entire pride, including Rays, our tiger, roared their farewell, a touching testament to the deep bonds and respect within our sanctuary.”
Max’s journey with Panthera began with resilience and courage, and he quickly became a symbol of strength and love. “His playful nature, combined with his kind spirit, brought joy to all who knew him. Max was often the first to greet visitors, walking along the fence with them and sharing his vibrant energy.
“Max will forever live on in our hearts and remain an integral part of Panthera Africa. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we carry forward our mission to provide a safe haven for big cats rescued from exploitation,” she concluded.
Panthera thanked Dr Peter Caldwell for his compassionate care as well as all their supporters for their unwavering love and support during this difficult time..
