Five suspected poachers were arrested last week when authorities responded to a tip-off about poaching activities at Buffeljagsbaai near Gansbaai. Overstrand Deputy Mayor Lindile Ntsabo, the councillor responsible for Protection Services and Crime Prevention, reports that Overstrand Municipality’s K9 and Task Team officers in partnership with CapeNature, Marine and Coastal unit as well as members of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) arrested five divers in Buffeljagsbaai near Gansbaai on 20 April. He added that diving equipment worth R115 000 and two rubberducks worth R340 000 as well as 24 whole and one shucked abalone with an estimated value of R4 000 were confiscated. “The suspects, abalone and diving equipment were taken to Bredasdorp SAPS for processing,” Ntsabo stated.
