Lukhanyo Primary School, in collaboration with two occupational therapy students from the University of Stellenbosch, hosted the quarterly Fun Day on 30 April.

Lukhanyo Primary, in collaboration with two final-year occupational therapy students from Stellenbosch University, hosted the quarterly Fun Day for the school’s 237 Grade 1 learners at the Zwelihle Sports Field on Tuesday 30 April.

The occupational-therapy students, Juanece Oelofse and Erica Solomons, are currently completing their Community Interaction rotation as their practical work at the school under the supervision of occupational therapist Annetta Saaiman.

“The goal of the event is to promote teamwork, well-being, physical activity, and serves as an introduction to sporting activities,” Oelofse said. “The development of these gross motor skills is a key component for the learners’ academic development.”

Despite the tremendous amount of fun and excitement associated with these activities, these sporting activities also address important aspects that serve as major building blocks for children. “Learners have the opportunity to develop their coordination, teamwork, concentration, social interaction, gross motor skills and visual motor abilities by engaging in these activities, which are all skills required for the effective functioning in the classroom.”

The day consisted of 10 stations with activities ranging from sack racing to ball activities. By the end of the day all the learners and teachers had received a lucky packet with some snacks and refreshments.

“We are grateful for all the generous sponsors who contributed to this day, which would not have been possible without them,” Solomons said.

She and Oelofse wished to thank Buco (Gateway Centre), Spar (Gateway Centre), Yorke Cash & Carry, Spur (Whale Coast Mall) and Checkers (Whale Coast Mall). “Each donation and contribution was significant in making this day a great success,” said Oelofse.

The next Fun Day is scheduled to occur during July, which will be hosted by the next Occupational Therapy students, for the Grade 2 learners of Lukhanyo Primary School. If anyone is willing to get involved, assist or contribute to making the next Fun Day a memorable one, please contact Annetta Saaiman at 072 118 5683 to get involved.
