The hampers, which cost R300 each, will contain basic food staples and a few festive treats to bring some cheer to families in need.

As 2024 quickly draws to a close, with Christmas only weeks away, many families in the Overberg are struggling to make ends meet.

“High food costs and rising unemployment rates have placed an overwhelming burden on those already living on the edge,” said Lana Coates, project leader of the Rotary Club of Stanford. “In Stanford this has left many vulnerable residents – particularly the elderly, sick, and financially struggling families – in a dire situation, especially as we approach the year-end.”

In a bid to make this Christmas a little brighter, the Rotary Club of Stanford is once again organising the distribution of food hampers to help ease the strain on the community. Coates said the hampers, which cost R300 each, will contain basic food staples and a few festive treats to bring some cheer to families in need.

“This year around 280 households in Stanford will benefit from the campaign, ensuring the most vulnerable members of our community will not go hungry during the holiday season,” Coates said.

The hampers will be packed and distributed on 19 December, with a focus on those who are in genuine need. This includes families struggling to survive on limited incomes as well as the elderly and sick who are often the most neglected at year-end.

Coates reassured readers that the initiative is well organised, ensuring each hamper goes to the right household.

“Organisers are keen to ensure that the donations reach those who need them the most, bringing relief during a difficult time.

“Your contribution, in the form of a monetary donation or physical item, will be greatly appreciated by the families receiving it.

“There is no greater gift than the look of gratitude on the face of a child or elderly person who receives this simple, but significant, act of kindness. For many, the food hampers will make a world of difference, allowing them to enjoy a humble Christmas meal with loved ones.”. Donations can be made as follows: Direct EFT into their bank account: The Rotary Club of Stanford; FNB Hermanus; Branch code: 250655; Account number: 623 559 796 95.
