Hawston Cricket Club travelled to Kleinmond on Saturday 23 November 2024 to compete in the 50 overs league decider of the Overberg 1st division. Both Kleinmond and Hawston were on 20 points on the log, meaning the winner of the match would take the honours.
Kleinmond won the toss and batted first and reached a total of 186 runs in 44.4 overs. Hawston bowlers were disciplined with C Koopman scoring 2 wickets for 38 runs in 10 overs, P Van Wyngaardt 2 wickets for 31 runs in 10 overs and L Tait 3 wickets for 19 runs in 7 overs.
Hawston went into bat chasing 187 for victory and being crowned the Overberg 1st Division champions.
B May (44 runs, off 37 balls including six fours) and C Kleinsmidt 34 runs, off 51 balls including three fours and one six) shared a 87 run partnership and laid the foundation for a successful chase. B Mitchell (15 runs) and D Jansen (29 runs) also shared a 47 run partnership together with P Van Wyngaardt (14 runs) who batted well taking Hawston home in the 34th over and reaching the target of 187 runs.
Hawston Cricket Club thanked all its supporters for cheering for them on Saturday and throughout the season. “We hope to see many more supporters coming out in future!” said a spokesperson for the team. “The 20-over competition is starting this coming Saturday and will see Hawston 1st versus Hawston 2nd teams at Hawston Sports Grounds. Please do come out to support us as it’s going to be raining sixes and fours!”
This success followed on the first team’s win the previous week when they welcomed Villiersdorp on Saturday 16 November for a 50-over encounter at the Hawston Oval. The home team batted first and put a good score on the board of 255 runs 44.4 overs.
Brattleigh Mitchell, who was in devastating form with bat and ball, scored 55 runs starred with club record breaking figures of 5 overs bowled, including double-wicket maidens and ending up with an incredible 6 wickets for only five runs. Truly remarkable figures from a remarkable cricketer. He was crowned Man of the Match.
The club invites everyone to support them at a six a side tournament that will be held at the Hawston Sports Ground on Monday 16 December. There will be no entry fee.
