Leopard toads are listed as an endangered species. Unfortunately the Western Leopard Toadlets are too small to get safely over the verge when they leave the breeding pond at the Willem Appel Dam in search of foraging. They get stuck on the verge lip and cannot get over, therefore many die as they dry out. In order to assist these little toads, Sheraine van Wyk of Whale Coast Conservation (WCC) took the initiative to add a cement wedge to the lip of these new verge stones, currently running from the R43 to Kiewietz Street, to Die Bron Primary School. Sheraine says it’s a long stretch but seems to be working. “If we can get an agreement from owners not to drive across the wet cement to allow it to dry out, we could then extend it past driveway entrances,” she added. This is a conservation intervention in partnership with Overstrand Municipality and she thanked the municipality for their assistance. The International Union of the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed the Western Leopard Toad as an endangered amphibian.
