Grabouw police conducted a major crime-prevention operation on 7 October, targeting perpetrators of serious violent crimes in the Siyayanzela and Khutsong informal settlements, resulting in multiple arrests related to firearms, drug trafficking and dangerous-weapon violations.
The multi-agency operation brought six law-enforcement units together, including Grabouw police, Public Order Police (POP), K9 units, the District Task Team, TWK Law Enforcement and TWK Traffic in a coordinated effort to combat escalating crime in the area.
During the sweep law-enforcement officers apprehended several suspects on charges related to contraventions of the Firearms Control Act, Drug Trafficking Act and Dangerous Weapons Act, although specific numbers of arrests were not disclosed. Grabouw Police Station commander Col Winston Coetzee emphasised the department’s commitment to community safety through strategic law-enforcement initiatives.
“This operation reflects our determination to ensure the safety and security of our neighbourhoods. The coordinated approach represents an escalation in law-enforcement efforts to address violent crime in areas that have experienced significant security challenges. Police officers are calling on residents to maintain heightened awareness and report suspicious activities immediately to support ongoing crime prevention efforts.
On 4 October they also successfully concluded a spiritual crime prevention operation marking a new approach to community safety through faith-based intervention.
Coetzee announced completing the operation, which aimed at fostering community safety and harmony through spiritual outreach and community engagement rather than traditional reactive policing methods. The initiative brought an extensive network of community stakeholders, including Grabouw police, the community-policing forum (CPF), emergency medical services (EMS) and neighbourhoodwatch (NHW) groups from multiple areas. “This initiative has demonstrated the positive impact of community engagement and spiritual outreach in crime prevention,” Coetzee said. “By working hand-in-hand with spiritual leaders and citizens, we believe we can effectively reduce crime and enhance the quality of life in our neighborhoods.” The operation involved collaboration with 16 different organisations and groups, including spiritual leaders from the Grabouw community, various neighbourhoodwatch groups from Rooidakke Eagles, Pineview Zone 1, Old Ridge, Nuwedorp and areas including Bosbou, Heights, Lost City and Dennekruin. Security companies STS Security and APS Security also participated.
