The Overberg Cluster Community Policing Board, in partnership with Solution Base and the Moravian Church, initiated a holiday programme for youth in various areas.

Trevor Hermanus, chairperson of the Overberg Cluster Community Policing Board, explained: “This programme, which runs concurrently in the Riviersonderend, Voorstekraal and Genadendal Moravian Church premises, is an attempt to reduce substance dependency and criminal activity among the children and youth of our communities.

“The objective is to have the beneficiaries in a safe, supervised environment, free from destructive influences and negative exposure. We aim to stimulate them constructively, daily, through life-skills programmes and have educational and informative visits from different departments and to offer various games and sporting codes.”

The programme, which commenced on 27 June, will run until 15 July. Approximately 200 children and youth will gather from Mondays to Fridays between 08:30 and 14:00 and two nutritious meals will be served to them daily. Feeding so many children is obviously a huge financial strain, and Hermanus invited prospective donors to visit the programme sites to gain first-hand knowledge of the challenges communities are facing.
