Overstrand Municipality has announced that the Kleinmond Estuary will remain closed until further notice. The decision to close the popular recreational spot was taken on Monday 21 November after a sewage blockage and overflow on the corner of the R44 and Middelrivier in Kleinmond on Friday. “The proximity to the Kleinmond Estuary (near the second footbridge) is a concern,” said OM Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill. “The distance from the overflow site into the stormwater is about 45 m until it enters the Middelrivier, which enters the estuary within about 175 m. Warning signs have been erected by the Overberg District Municipality (ODM). The public is warned not to swim in the estuary until further notice. The sign will be removed once water sample results are found to be within ODM’s recreational water quality standards.”
