HERMANUS – When one is in a situation where you need to vacate your current premises, as the landlord has either sold the property or is moving in, and one has to relocate elsewhere, I find that looking at Property24, PrivateProperty or other such websites very amusing.
Do the owners of these properties that they rent out realise the average salary in Hermanus is about R6 000 per month?
So should one have a family of four and one earns, say, R6 000 per month, and one’s husband R10 000 (a total of R16 000), one would only be able to pay a landlord a maximum of R5 000 per month.
Families have to pay school fees (if they have children – which most do), water, electricity, petrol and that biggest money grabber of all, food.
Everyone lives hand-to-mouth, robs Peter to pay Paul, and at times cannot even pay their rent.
Yet the landlords believe the higher the rent the better the tenant.
It does not always work that way.
To think that we are looking for a four-bedroomed house with a double garage, and the going rental amount is between R16 000 and R35 000 per month, we may well find ourselves in a situation where our landlord may have to move in with us, for we cannot afford to move out.
Come on, landlords – catch a wake up call!
Half of you have rentals so high, yet the house is so old and falling apart. And what do you care?
As long as you get your money every month.
