Legacy Martial Arts Academy students stood out head and shoulders above their competitors at the Overberg championships held recently, bagging a total of 61 gold, seven silver and two bronze medals.
To top this off, 20 of the 28 LMAA competitors were also selected for the Overberg district team that will be compete in the Western Cape Provincial Kickboxing Championships in Saldanha on 21 September.
Legacy hosted the Overberg Championships held at Curro Hermanus in Sandbaai on 20 July.
Other Overberg martial arts academies that participated were MMA Dragons Struisbaai and Triple-D Martial Arts Centre from Bredasdorp. Four clubs from the Cape Metropole and Cape Winelands also took part in the competition.
Altogether 26 of the LMAA participants bagged a total of 61 gold medals. Twelve of the LMAA fighters bagged three gold medals each. They were Aidan Brummer, Alexander Jansen van Vuuren, Lyle Asary, James Banwell, Dylan Isaacs, Shihan Ruehan van Romburgh, Mason Brummer, Justice Luthuli, Zius Brand, Werner Enslin-Roux, Namika Pieterse and Chelene Kreusch.
Jason du Bruyn, Willem Scheepers, Alexander du Toit, Sempai Zaanru Fraser, Emma Asary, Amalia Elize Meiring, Leyla Brand, Zak Bloch, Qvaro van der Westhuizen, Evoque van der Westhuizen and Rudland Fourie all won two gold medals each. Alexander also won silver, as did Zak.
Stiaan Gildenhuys and Sam Bloch each won one gold and one silver medal, Edward Strever won two bronze medals, Zian Rossouw won a bronze and a gold medal and Spencer Damons won one silver medal.
“It was really a gold rush for Legacy,” said an ecstatic Ruehan.
Triple-D Martial Arts Centre fighters also bagged 30 gold, 13 silver and five bronze medals, while the MMA Dragons Struisbaai bagged four gold and six silver medals.
Twenty LMAA fighters were selected for the Overberg team that will compete at the WP provincial championships held in Saldanha in September.
They are Leyla Brand, Zak Bloch, Chelene Kreusch, Qvaro van der Westhuizen, Mason Brummer, Aidan Brummer, Jason du Bruyn, Emma Asary, Lyle Asary, Alexander Jansen van Vuuren, Justice Luthuli, Zius Brand, Werner Enslin-Roux, Sam Bloch, Zaanru Fraser, Alexander du Toit, Dylan Isaacs, Shihan Ruehan van Romburgh, James Banwell and Evoque van der Westhuizen.
Eleven LMAA fighters also competed in a Tatami Challenge in Bergvliet, Cape Town last weekend. The fighters brought home 14 gold, eight silver and two bronze medals. They were Emma Asary (2 gold), Lyle Asary (gold, silver), Dylan Isaacs (bronze), Sam Bloch (gold, silver), Leyla Brand (2 silver), Werner Enslin-Roux (2 gold, 1 silver), Zak Bloch (bronze and silver), Zius Brand (1 gold, 2 silver), Amalia Elize Meiring (2 gold) and Zian Rossouw (2 gold).
