As the rain started to pour down on Saturday 5 September hundreds of supporters of the Move One Million movement decided to take a stand in Kleinmond and Hermanus.
The Move One Million movement, involving people from across the world, takes a stand against injustice by wearing black and showing up in public spaces holding posters and banners aloft. In South Africa it is an opportunity to unite everyone in the country in the fight against corruption, violence against women and children, farm attacks and murders.
The organisers of the protest in Hermanus were very pleased with the turnout on Saturday, especially since the weather was rainy and cold. The protest took place in the Kleinmond Main Road, opposite the Total petrol station, and along the R43 at Gateway Centre in Hermanus. Close to 150 people attended the protest in Kleinmond, which was described as an upbeat but peaceful protest.
The organisers of the Move One Million movement stated clearly from its outset that all protest action must be peaceful, and warned that if anyone intend in any way to disrupt the peaceful nature of the protest, that they should not bother to attend.
Linda van Zyl, an organiser from Kleinmond, says she was pleasantly surprised by the number of people who showed up to support the action in bad weather.
“We are very busy with community awareness, and we are determined to do even better with our October protest,” she said.
Following the various protests, founder of Move One Million Jarette Petzer announced the next protest will take place on 24 October..
“I want to power the light,” she declared. “On 24 October we are going to do this all over again. We are going to keep on bringing the light. So, brace yourselves. Save the date. I want to double the numbers and we are going all the way.”
