Local karateka from Legacy Martial Arts Academy in Hermanusprove their mettle in Stellenbosch

Karate students of Legacy Martial Arts Academy in Hermanus recently competed in the National Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate Kyo Kai held at Stellenbosch University.


Karate students of Legacy Martial Arts Academy in Hermanus recently competed in the National Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate Kyo Kai held at Stellenbosch University.

The academy did extremely well by bringing home 17 medals (two gold, six silver and nine bronze).

Sensei Ruehan van Romburgh reported that this group was a mix of seasoned competitors and newcomers.

For 10 of the 16 karateka these were their first nationals. “The seasoned karateka showed their experience and guided the less experienced participants through what was the first national karate tournament for many,” he stated.

The youngest of the group is only 5 years old.

Dylan Isaacs won gold and silver medals; Tiano Xakatha won gold; Terrence Kamuzonde silver; Oluje Kadama won silver and bronze; Benjamin du Toit silver; Leo Miller silver and Tash Kamuzonde silver.

Johannes du Toit won two bronze medals, while Lerisha Montague, Heinrich de Jongh, Jason Velleman, Roelof Burger, Luc van der Westhuizen and Rene Rodenberg each brought home a bronze medal.
