“They are all severely traumatised, all facing the typical consequences faced by survivors of sexual violence,” Sack stated.
The main thing now, she said, is that an arrest was made and the process to get justice for the victims has started.
“We hope more victims will come forward now that the first step (reporting the alleged rape) has been taken. If more victims come forward it shows a pattern of behaviour and strengthens the case. Victims can then also lean on, strengthen and support one another.”
The accused appeared in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court and was released on bail of R1 000. His next court appearance is scheduled for 13 July.
Eric Ntabazalila, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in the Western Cape, confirmed the accused currently only faces one rape charge.
“The case is still under investigation and additional charges will be added as new victims come forward,” said September.
A local surfer and businessman says he would like to see the alleged perpetrator face justice, for he had done “a lot of damage to the surfing industry and tourism” in Hermanus.
He added that those involved in the local surfing fraternity want to make their voices heard against the alleged perpetrator and called on other victims to speak out about their experiences with the surf instructor.
“We as residents can support them, provide accommodation and find them doctors, therapists and lawyers should they need it.”
