Officers attached to Overstrand Municipality’s Task Team, LEAP and the Land Invasion Unit confiscated West Coast Rock Lobster tails worth more than half a million rand during the early hours of Sunday 19 November.
Deputy Mayor Lindile Ntsabo, who is also Mayco Member for Protection Services, reported the officials were busy doing crime-prevention patrols on the R43, between Hermanus and the Kleinmond crossing, when they spotted a white Toyota Hilux bakkie with a missing rear registration number plate, driving recklessly and at high speed.
“The members tried to stop the vehicle,” said Ntsabo, “but the driver refused to pull over and sped away with the Task Team in pursuit. They succeeded in stopping the bakkie on the N2 near Houw Hoek.”
On searching the vehicle they found 13 bags containing 12 023 crayfish tails in the vehicle.
The estimated value of the crayfish is R602 000. The 43-year-old suspect was arrested and handed over to the Grabouw police along with the confiscated goods.
