Once again the kickboxers of the Legacy Martial Arts Academy performed extremely well at the National Kickboxing Championships.
Altogether 14 locals represented the Western Cape Kickboxing Team at the South African National Kickboxing Championships, held in Newcastle from 26–29 April. According to Shihan Ruehan van Romburgh this year’s championship was truly one for the books … “filled with electrifying team spirit, camaraderie, and sportsmanship – both in and out of the ring. The encouragement and mutual support shared among provinces highlighted the true essence of martial arts.”
He said this prestigious tournament brought together 776 of the country’s top fighters to battle it out for national titles. “With the World Senior and Masters Championships taking place in Abu Dhabi this November, senior fighters had even more to fight for,” he explained.
Legacy’s team made an impressive mark by bringing home nine South African national titles, improving on their 2024 tally of eight titles. Additionally, Aidan Brummer captured the coveted Junior Champion of Champions title in the open-weight point fighting division – a special Gala event where only four such titles are awarded annually: Junior Male, Junior Female, Senior Male, and Senior Female.
Legacy fighters received nine gold medals, nine silver medals, 15 bronze medals and one Champion of Champions Trophy. “In total the 14 athletes earned 34 trophies, showcasing the academy’s depth of talent and preparation,” Van Romburgh said. The Western Cape Kickboxing Team also claimed top honours overall, earning the most gold medals. Gauteng followed in second place.
The following athletes were also selected for the National and President South African Teams: Zius Brand, Aidan Brummer, Leyla Brand, Werner Enslin-Roux, Namika Pieterse, Ruehan van Romburgh, Emma Asary, Zak Bloch, Alexander du Toit and Dylan Isaacs. Mason Brummer, Lyle Asary, James Banwell and Sam Bloch were also selected for the President Team.
