ln response to the letter from Colleen Wood (“Confusion over laundry status causes hardship”, ll June 2020) I would like to set the record straight.

I am the owner of the laundry that advertised under essential services in The Village News. As a local medical centre is one of my customers – not only their bedding, but the patient’s personal laundry as well – I am indeed an essential service, and so I obtained the necessary authorisation to operate my business

Various other laundries contacted me with regard to the advertisement, and I had no problem advising them how to obtain the necessary authorisation from government, and not the municipality.

I was not the only laundry that was open, just the only one that advertised.

I would gladly have answered all Mrs Volschenk’s questions and assisted her as well to obtain the necessary authorisation should she have contacted me.

Finally, every single business in Hermanus is suffering under present conditions. Some have been allowed to reopen, but many have not been afforded that luxury yet.

Life is never fair, and we have to do the best we can with the cards we have been dealt. Mrs Volschenk is a pensioner, so she has an additional income, something I am sure many business owners wish they had as well.

Gwenda’s Laundry,

Hermanus
