Each year Mediclinic takes a special day out to recognise its nurses for their pivotal contribution to the quality of the health care it provides.
While the group acknowledges the last two years have been challenging for all health-care workers around the world, they are grateful to take this opportunity to shine the light on the invaluable nursing teams within our hospitals.
This year, as we celebrated International Nurses’ Day on 12 May, Mediclinic Hermanus honoured each nurse who has chosen a career of caring for others. Cobé Grobler, Patient Experience Officer, says it is not a task that can be ticked off on a “to do” list, nor can it be measured like blood pressure. “Caring can’t be studied in a textbook nor captured on a CV,” she stated. “But it can be seen and felt by those who receive this care, and it is impossible to miss. We recognise these unmistakeable carers at our hospitals.”
Each year, the staff of each Mediclinic locality select a Nursing Excellence Award winner, nominated by their peers in recognition for the selfless work they invest in caring for patients.
“At Mediclinic Hermanus we would like to acknowledge all our nurses and specifically our nominees for the annual 2022 Nursing Excellence Award,” Grobler said. “We recognise their care for others is the reason our patients visit our hospitals and trust our expertise. We specifically acknowledge our recipient of the 2022 Nursing Excellence Award, Killian Arendse, who receives this token of appreciation and recognition for the care he delivers to his patients and supporting his colleagues in an exceptionally challenging era in health care.”
Arendse’s unit manager Sr Berna Austin describes him as the perfect example of living the values of Mediclinic. He is focused on patient safety, which can be seen in the way he communicates with patients. He is client-focused, something that can be seen in the way he treats his patients, with empathy, compassion and respect.
He is a great team player, sharing information, knowledge and resources. He always maintains mutual trust and respect towards his colleagues as well as the doctors. Arendse is seen as honest, sincere, fair and transparent. He is performance-driven and always encourages and supports learning and development. He is an asset to the hospital and always offers his help where needed.
