Locals should prepare themselves for busier roads and less available parking spots as the warmer weather and September school holidays are expected to draw more visitors to the region.

Added to this is the fact that at least nine municipal-approved events in the Overstrand are scheduled for September and October. These events, which will offer something to people of all ages and tastes, will kick off this weekend with the much-anticipated Chelsea Flowers event in Stanford, which will open to the public on Saturday 21 September, and the Celebration of Fynbos Festival at the Fernkloof Nature Reserve Gardens.

Other highlights of the long weekend include the Ceramics Festival in Kleinmond and the Wine and Cheese Tasting and Art Exhibition at the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden in Betty’s Bay.

If you haven’t been to Danger Point Lighthouse outside Gansbaai Heritage Day, which is celebrated on Tuesday 24 September, is the perfect time to explore this beautiful landmark as the lighthouse has an open day from 10:00 to 14:45.

Following these events the Stanford Sunset Market on the Village Green will be returning on 27 September after its winter break, the Whale Festival in Hermanus takes place from 27 to 29 September, and the Vissermans Fees is scheduled for 28 September at the Gansbaai Harbour.

Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill advised residents to prepare for busy roads and potential parking difficulties. “Plan to leave earlier than normal and consider using ride-sharing when possible,” he advised.

He added a reminder that some routes into the area may be impacted by construction, such as the R43 between Gansbaai and Stanford.

In the event of major road closures the municipality will provide updates on Facebook and through the ward councillors’ WhatsApp groups.

“Please be patient and follow the directions of officials – they will be working hard to manage the increased traffic and maintain safety,” said O’Neill.

“Remember to take your rubbish with you and leave the public bathrooms in a clean condition. Lastly, avoid leaving valuables like cell phones and wallets in plain sight or on your car’s seat; secure them in the boot instead.”
