Public safety officers helped police arrest a Westcliff suspect recently for being in possession of restricted sea life.
“Hermanus Public Protection (HPP) was asked to assist when a stolen cellphone was tracked to the Swallow Park area,” explains Marius Boshoff, Hermanus branch manager for Fidelity ADT.
“The phone was stolen a while ago, but a signal was suddenly received when the phone was switched on.
“Several people in Swallow Park agreed to be searched by officers who were sent to investigate, but there was no sign of the stolen phone.
“Officers spotted one person who refused to be searched, and law enforcement was asked to assist, which led to the discovery of abalone and periwinkle in his possession.”
In other incidents involving HPP officers a suspect was arrested after he had allegedly stolen a hat from a store at Market Square. The officers tracked him down with the hat still in his possession, but the store owner declined to press charges.
Police proceeded to nonetheless arrest the suspect when he was found to also have a large knife on him.
HPP officers also responded to a report of a burglary in Hermanus Heights and later found a suspect with items he had allegedly stolen from an address on Church Street, Westcliff.
