On Monday 5 December, on what was their last ordinary meeting for 2022, the Overberg District Municipality (ODM) bestowed the title of alderman on two councillors.
This is a particular honour for councillors who have served on one or more local government bodies of South Africa for several years.
This honorific, which is held for life (even after leaving public service), is bestowed once a year, and this year councillors Ronald Brinkhuys and Roland Theo Oliver received theirs from Overberg Executive Mayor Sakkie Franken and Municipal Manager Richard Bosman.
At the same meeting, ODM officials with 30 years’ or longer service were acknowledged by receiving Long Service Certificates as a gesture of appreciation for their loyal service.
Nigel Klaasen, a junior production manager on the Elgin farm Fruitways Glen Elgin, recently received the award for Western Cape Prestige Agri-Worker of the Year for 2022.
This is an achievement Franken said he was truly happy about, particularly since the winner is from the Overberg region.
