The Overberg B team ended in second place in the B-Division at the Western Cape Championships held in Malmesbury recently.

The Overberg Netball Federation has much to boast about after one of its coaches, Desiree Namise from Bredasdorp, was selected as the assistant coach for the Southern Stings, one of the professional provincial teams competing in the prestigious Telkom Netball League.

Adding to their joy is the fact that two of its players excelled at the Western Cape Championships held in Malmesbury over the weekend of 25 – 27 April with Heylah Baily from the Drean Team Netball Club in Botrivier awarded the title of Best Shooter in the B-Division and Nicole Abrahams pf Cape Diamonds Netball Club from Bredasdorp being crowned as the Best Defender in the B-Division.

At the championships at the end of April, the Overberg B-team achieved a remarkable second place in the B-Division while the A-team secured fourth place in the A-division. Alzeen Vlotman, Interim Chairperson of the Overberg Netball Federation, said the club is extremely proud of these two teams that will represent the Overber Netball Federation ar the South African Championships that will be held in Johannesburg in August.

“It gives us great pride to share the exciting progress and achievements of the Overberg Netball Federation,” she stated..The Overberg Netball Federation represents the four municipal areas of Swellendam, Cape Agulhas, Theewaterskloof, and Overstrand. Its mission is to develop, promote, and administer the sport of netball within the district for the benefit of all of its members — players, umpires, coaches, technical officials, management, and selectors.

She added: “We are thrilled to announce that Ronday Martin from Caledon, who is affiliated to the Riviersonderend Netball Club, participated in the final trials for the Southern Stings and Tornado’s Netball teams — two of the Western Cape’s professional teams competing in the prestigious Telkom Netball League. This league showcases South Africa’s top high-performance players aiming for national Protea selection.”

Unfortunately Ronday was not selected for any of the teams. “Adding to our pride, Desiree Namise from Bredasdorp has been appointed as the Assistant Coach of the Southern Stings team — a significant honour for the Overberg Netball community. The Telkom Netball League is currently being broadcast on SuperSport channels, allowing fans nationwide to witness the incredible talent on display,” Vlotman stated.

The Overberg Netball Federation will be hosting a Level 1 Accredited Coaching Course from 16–17 May at Hermanus High School. “This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone wishing to deepen their knowledge and contribute to the development of netball in our region. If you would like to affiliate with the Federation as a player, coach, umpire, selector, team manager, technical official, or member, we warmly invite you to make contact with us. Your skills, knowledge, and experience will be highly appreciated as we work together to build a stronger Federation.”

According to Vlotman financial challenges remain, and the Federation is seeking sponsorships and donations to help them achieve their goals. For sponsorships or more information, contact Alzeen Vlotman on 076 149 3805.
