Sections of the R43 between Mount Pleasant and Hermanus were closed on Friday as more than 1 500 Zwelihle residents marched to Overstrand Municipality’s offices to hand a memorandum over. A representative of the Land Party handed the memorandum to Overstrand Executive Mayor Dr Annelie Rabie, Hermanus police acting commander Lieutenant Colonel Ntombozuko Ninzi and acting Overberg Police Cluster Commander Colonel June Maarman. At the top of the list of demands contained in the memorandum was the demand for serviced stands. Protesters also demanded the provision of water, sanitation, electricity and roads for the people living in Dubai and Marikana informal settlements and that residents’ municipal debt be scrapped. A large contingency of local police officials, members of the Public Order Police Unit and Overstrand Law Enforcement officials monitored the situation. “No incidents were reported,” Captain Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus police, confirmed.Photo: Facebook
