ARNISTON – A man picking up shells on the beach got more than he bargained for when he came upon a skeleton buried in the sand at Otter Beach in Arniston.
Warrant officer Jakobus Marthinus, spokesperson for the Bredasdorp police, confirmed that the police were called out to the scene on Friday 31 December at about 13:30.
“He alleged that he was picking up shells along the beach when he came upon the human bones near the high water mark,” Marthinus stated.
“WO Lionel October of Bredasdorp Detectives contacted a member of the Western Cape Police Victim Identification Centre lab to further investigate the scene.”
Marthinus confirmed that the full skeleton of a human was collected by the Hermanus Forensic Pathology unit for further investigation.
“On Thursday 6 January the human bones were examined by an expert officer of the Victim Identification Centre lab and it was found to be that of a male between the ages of 16 and 18 years that is believed to have been buried about a year ago,” Marthinus stated.
