The SPAR Virtual Challenge will team up with Bruce Fordyce’s parkrun SA on Saturday 3 September. Not only does this boost the causes that both support, but it also offers people who have entered the virtual challenge a safe space to run on the day.

“We are super excited that the SPAR Virtual Challenge has teamed up with parkrun! Yes, on 3 September you will have a safe space to run with your friends or family,” said Elsabe van Zyl, advertising manager for SPAR Western Cape and Namibia.

The steps to enter the SPAR Virtual Challenge are easy: Go to https://sparvirtualchallenge.co.za, and choose your payment options and entry pack collection points. Afterwards link up with a parkrun close to you, by going to parkrun.co.za/events and clicking the location button to find your nearest parkrun.

Most parkruns in SA start at 08:00; it is best to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start. Always check the web page or Facebook page of the parkrun you intend joining, to keep in touch with the latest information.

Parkrun’s only time a 5 km walk or run, but if you want to, you are welcome to add a 5 km lap of your own – and then time your own 10 km.

The collaboration is for the one day only (3 September). On the day, SPAR will be uniting all those who have entered the virtual challenge via a live-stream studio. Entrants throughout SA and Namibia are encouraged to post their pics using the hashtags: #SPARvirtualchallenge and #iRise.

The SPAR Virtual Challenge joins Bruce Fordyce in making the dream of providing 200 defibrillators a reality for every parkrun event across SA. Globally defibrillators have saved many lives. Each defibrillator costs about R20 000 and the aim is to raise R4 million, and SPAR will donate to this cause.

For every entry received for the challenge, SPAR will donate a pack of sanitary pads for a schoolgirl in need. “We are absolutely still keeping our girls at school by donating a pack of sanitary pads to girls in need, for every SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge entry,” Van Zyl added.

Entry to the SPAR Virtual Challenge costs R120, which includes a funky drawstring bag, T-shirt, buff, peak cap, medal and printed magazine. Admission to the parkrun is free, and only offers a safe venue, as well as a timed 5 km. You have to enter the SPAR Virtual Challenge and register for the parkrun.
