It seems the whale season has officially arrived with a number of sightings reported the past week. The Marine Dynamics Shark and Whale Tours team noted its first sighting of two southern right whales from their boat on Friday 27 May just after 12:00. Wilfred Chivell, CEO of Marine Dynamics and Founder of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, said cheers went up through the offices of the Great White House when skipper Dickie Chivell’s message came through that they had sighted the whales. Marine Dynamics’ marine biologist and guide on the whale watching boat, Jade Sookhoo, stated: “It looked like a male and female pair. Gansbaai has been speculating whether these honourable guests to the Overstrand made their arrival a week ago already, some residents convinced they had heard the definite signal southern rights were here with their V-shaped spout.
