Names such as Scull Riders, Lizard Kings and In Irons, leather jackets full of badges, gleaming machines and loads of toys can only mean one thing – the annual Toy Run Overberg.
Bikers from all over Cape Town, the Overberg and as far as Malmesbury took part in the Toy Run on Sunday 26 November. The first stop was in Caledon, where local riders joined those from further afield. Although leather jackets were predominant, many riders were dressed in colourful outfits like tutus and even angel wings with toys strapped to their bikes and bodies.
It was an extremely festive atmosphere before the roar of the machines announced their departure. Because of the stop-and-go’s on the Hemel-and-Aarde road, the route was adapted slightly for this year’s ride. From Caledon the bikers rode to Van Brakel Stoor, where they met up with riders from Bredasdorp before continuing via Stanford to their end destination at Birkenhead Brewery.
All the toys as well as stationery, which some riders brought along, will be distributed to various charities by the organisers.
All the riders that the Hermanus Times spoke to said that apart from this toy run they often take part in other charity events in their communities.
