The R44 is not only one of the most scenic routes in South Africa, but also the planned route for the Race2Stanford Triathlon that was held on 22 October.
The organisers planned the new race route to begin in Gordon’s Bay and end in Hermanus. But with 80 km/h winds the race was moved and the distances adjusted.
And it was a race to remember for Herman de Vries of Walker Bay Adventures who won the Race2Stanford Sprint Triathlon of 2022 in a time of 1:04:57 – there was an Ultra Triathlon as well.
The swimming event of 750 m took place in Hermanus New Harbour and De Vries came out second. The cycling (20 km) was held from the New Harbour in the direction of Vermont and back to Gearings Point and running (5 km) where they finished at the amphitheatre at the Old Harbour. “This was an awesome experience for me,” De Vries said. The unique trophy he won was designed by the local artist Jaco Sieberhagen of Onrus.
