It was a festive occasion when alderman status was bestowed on Overstrand Deputy Mayor Lindile Ntsabo and Speaker Grant Cohen at the monthly council meeting last week.

This title is bestowed on councillors for meritorious service over several years. A councillor receives credits towards this honour for the number of years they have served as a councillor and then additional credits can be obtained for serving as chairperson of a ward committee, on the Mayoral Committee or time served as a Speaker, Deputy Executive Mayor or Executive Mayor of the municipality.

Overstrand Executive Mayor Dr Annelie Rabie called Masizole Mnqasela, former Western Cape Provincial Parliament Speaker, to do the honours of pinning the special badges, denoting their new status on Ntsabo and Cohen’s lapels. “This is not about politics,” she said. “We need to recognise the role Masizole played in Lindile’s life.”

Mnqasela described it as a proud and special moment for him, as he also had the honour of robing them during the inauguration of the “new” council of the Overstrand in November 2021.
