Education in South Africa is a basic human right that is constitutionally enshrined.

Section 29 of the Bill of Rights in the South African Constitution guarantees every child the right to basic education and places an obligation on the state to protect, respect, promote and fulfil the right to education.

Luckily for parents in Hermanus there are organisations such as the EMS Foundation that realise the importance of education, which is why the Waldorf School in Hermanus now boasts a new high school.

On 8 November the school opened its Hermanus Waldorf High School with the help of the EMS Foundation.

“The Hermanus Waldorf School lies at the heart of the Hermanus community,” Elizabeth Steyn from the EMS Foundation pointed out.

The new high school is also named after Steyn.

“We are delighted to have been involved with this learner-centred inclusive educational space in which children can really flourish.

“The EMS Foundation has met the costs of building three classrooms and ablution facilities, so the school can extend the opportunity to its learners to enjoy a high school education from 2023.”

The current crop of Grade 7 learners said they were excited about their new classrooms and were looking forward to Grade 8, especially as they will be the first crop of learners at the high school at Waldorf.
