According to Wikipedia, Remembrance Day or Poppy Day has been a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honour servicemen and -women who died in the line of duty.
War remembrances are conducted in several other non-Commonwealth countries.
Locally, a service to mark the occasion was held on Sunday morning, 12 November, at the cenotaph at the Hermanus Old Harbour to honour war veterans. It was organised by the Memorable Order of Tin Hats’ (MOTHs) Seagull Shellhole Hermanus in collaboration with the Overstrand Municipality.
“Most countries observe Remembrance Day on 11 November to commemorate the end of the First World War. The hostilities formally ended at ‘the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918’,” Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill said.
A feature of the commemoration is the trumpeting of “The Last Post”, followed by a period of silence and the laying of wreaths.
The community of Tesselaarsdal also hosted a special Remembrance Day service on Saturday, while the Dutch Reformed church in Napier held a service on Sunday.
