Worth their weight in gold

The Overstrand Whale Boxing Club (OWBC) showed its mettle at the Easter Boxing Tournament and brought home the trophy for the Best Female Boxer, the Best Male Boxer and the Best Performing Club.


The Overstrand Whale Boxing Club (OWBC) showed its mettle at the Easter Boxing Tournament and brought home the trophy for the Best Female Boxer, the Best Male Boxer and the Best Performing Club.

Coach Mzi Damesi, coach Thando Damesi and 13 boxers of the OWBC travelled to the Eastern Cape for the tournament, which took place from 15 to 17 April. Mzi reported the club won 10 gold medals and one silver at the event in Umthatha on Friday 15 April.

“Nkatliseng Qheya won the big trophy for the best female boxer of the tournament in Umthatha,” Mzi said proudly. “Our club won the trophy for the best club at the tournament in Umthatha.”

On Saturday 16 April, the club participated in the event held in Duncan Village, East London where Kolunga Ndleleni won the trophy for the best male boxer of the tournament.

“The whole club won nine gold and two silver medals,” said Mzi. “East London is the top district in boxing, so we are happy to have achieved such great results in that district. I am so proud of my boxers who worked extremely hard to achieve these results.”

He thanked OWBC’s main sponsor, EMS, which sponsored the club’s accommodation, food and transport. “Thank you also to Burnley FC in the UK for the beautiful T-shirts and Zwelihle businessman ‘Mthura’ Zukisani Soqwathulo, of Indalo Yethu Construction and Projects, who donated R10 000. This is the first time we have received donations from a business in Zwelihle. Special thanks go to Carol Dodds and David Worral for the role they play in our club’s growth.”
