Several cancellations of the launch of young author Janélle Hendricks’ book Grandpa’s Treasure Chest have not phased her at all. In fact, the first edition of the book has recently been published and is now being translated into Afrikaans as Oupa se skatkis and plans for an isiXhosa translation are also underway.

Janélle, from Riviersonderend, was only 10 when she wrote and illustrated the book, which is about a kind-hearted old man who had the most beautiful flower garden and who, after discovering a hidden secret buried in his favourite garden spot, decides to do something to uplift his community.

Janélle has written numerous other stories as well, and they all share an important life or moral lesson.

Gisela Hendricks, Janélle’s mother, says:” Janélle’s book inspired the registration of the Alpha to Omega Learning Academy, where she assists and promotes reading and literacy. She hopes to continue to inspire her peers and to promote reading.”
